South Africa Tri Nations Rugby Union

The re-emergence of the South African Rugby team in recent years has been nothing short of fantastic for a nation steeped in rugby history. Prior to the apartheid, the Spingboks were forces to be reckoned with at every level of International rugby. However, in 1981 they were banned from playing international competiton by the International Rugby Board and not readmitted until 1992.

It was not until the 1995 Rugby World Cup that South Africa rediscovered their form of years gone by, winning the tournament as the host country. An achievemnt that is undoubtedlby the greatest in South African sporitng history.

In 1996 they were founder members of the Tri Nations Series along with Australisa and New Zealand. The Springboks won the Tri Nations Championship for the first time in 1998 and again for the second and last time in 2004. South Africa will be optimistic of performing better in the 2009 Tri Nations Championships after signs of improvement during the 2007 World Cup. They will also be looking to win back the Nelson Mandela Challenge Plate from Australia for the first time since 2005 as well as winning back the the Freedom Cup from current holders New Zealand.

South Africa 2009 Tri Nations Form

So far the Boks have been unstoppable, winning all three of their home 2009 Tri Nations fixtures and have stretched to an eight points lead in the 2009 Tri Nations table. They now have the difficult task of confirming their home form in three matches in the antipodes, two against Australia nd one against the All Blacks.

There is no doubt that coach, Peter de Villiers has his side extremely well drilled and well motivated as they have looked unplayable, let alone unbeatable so far in the Series. Although not scoring too many tries but with the intensity of their play, they are forcing the opposition into indiscipline and mistakes. These mistakes are being punished by the incredible kicking of outside half, Morne Steyn, who has scored 55 points in his last two matches; breaking two Tri Nations records on the way.

It is little wonder why they are very short priced odds on favourites in the Tri Nations Betting to win their third Series crown this year and being the current World Champions and Series victors over the British & Irish Lions, it is a serious purple patch for South African rugby.

2009 South Africa Tri Nations Squad

The Springboks come into the 2009 Tri-Nations after a 2-1 series win over the touring British & Irish Lions. However the 28-9 defeat in the final match showed that the ‘Boks’ were lacking strength in depth and could be similarly exposed in this tournament.

Coach, Peter de Villiers named his Tri Nations squad on 14th July. Their first match is not until 25th July when they entertain the All Blacks at Bloemfontein.
